Step Parent Adoption
If you have children from a previous marriage and remarry, your new spouse may be interested in adopting your children from the previous marriage. The adoption process can be simple, but can also become very complex. If a biological parent consents to the adoption by the stepparent, the adoption can be a relatively smooth process. However, if the biological parent refuses to consent to the adoption, the process gets much more complex. The biological parent’s parental rights must first be terminated by the court before the adoption process can be commenced.
Although you are not required to hire an attorney, it is best to seek legal advice before starting the adoption process. If you have questions about the adoption process, whether you are adopting a child or placing a child for adoption, please contact our office for assistance.
